Get ready, Indianapolis! Super Bowl XLVI is just around the corner! Despite a down season for the Colts, the 2011-2012 NFL season will still be one to remember. Thousands and thousands of people from all over the country will soon be pouring into town to take part in the biggest football event of the year. Throughout the month of January, Indianapolis residents will witness the biggest temporary population increase that most natives can remember. Fun and festivities will be off the charts, but so will traffic.![]()
According to the IndyStar, the Super Bowl Village and the NFL Experience will both be located downtown Indianapolis come the end of January, but downtown traffic is to be expected. However, some areas in which some people might not expect to see horrific amounts of Super Bowl traffic include suburbs in neighboring counties. The communities of Carmel, Zionsville, and Noblesville are each planning to throw their own Bowl bashes, with road closures and detours likely. Cities as far away as Muncie (about forty minutes northeast on I-69) are preparing for drastic changes in traffic patterns. These "Celebration Cities" should be festive fun focal points, but will also likely cause horrible headaches for area residents who might not be as patient about all of the extra traffic.
Probably one of the best things local residents can do to avoid the worst of the traffic this Super Bowl season is to limit the number of trips to downtown Indianapolis and to the "Celebration Cities". For most people, a visit to the epicenter of the madness at Super Bowl Village would be memorable, if not a once in a lifetime opportunity. But so would the traffic congestion. If you want to go, which most people probably will at least once or twice, then go. However, it might be best to limit the number of your visits to town, but once you are there then make sure to get your fill of fun.
Another good tip for avoiding traffic congestion, and therefore decreasing your risk of involvement in an auto accident, is to take side roads that parallel the major Indianapolis thoroughfares. Meridian, Keystone, and all Interstate highways might be the fastest routes in and around town normally, but out-of-towners who are not familiar with the area and the "short-cuts" will flock to the biggest roadways on their GPS.
Last but not least, The Batesky Law Office would like all local Indianapolis residents to remember to drive carefully, be patient, and let the out-of-towners cause their own chaos and auto accidents. We do not need to contribute what is sure to be an already hectic time on the roads.
